Cat animals no longer have the ability to feel sweet due to a previous genetic change. Pandas, on the other hand, have this taste and according to researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, they are also very fond of sweets.

Normally, pandas live almost exclusively on bamboo, but the researchers in this study not only showed that bears can feel sweet, they also prefer water sweetened with natural sweeteners before regular water. This was evident during the researchers’ study and there are also examples of pandas at zoos prefering sweet potatoes as food.

“The results can be of great importance for the conservation of this endangered species as their natural habitat continues to be destroyed,” says molecular biologist Peihua Jiang, who conducted the study.
